Wat Ratchabophit Sathit Maha Simaram is considered as the last royal temple the King built according to the royal tradition that each monarch must have his own temple of his reign.

The principal Buddha Image is represented on an Italian marble pedestal. It was casted from the reign of Rama IV until the early of Rama V with the gold Rama IV had used when he was young. King Rama IV first suggested that the image be placed in Phra Pathommachedi. Unfortunately, he passed away so King Rama V had it installed as the principal Buddha image in the Phra Ubosot of Wat Ratchabophit on 12th September 1872.
